Is The Whole Country Watching ND?
Why would the whole country be watching North Dakota?
Probably because the Legislators passed, and the Governor signed, some very controversial legislation in regard to Abortion. This occured around the last week or two in March, 2013.
House Bill 1456 requires a Physician to determine whether there is a detectable heartbeat prior to performing an abortion. A Physician who willingly performs an abortion after the detection of a heartbeat could be subject to a Class C Felony.
House Bill 1305 will make it a Class A misdeameanor to a physician to willingly, performs an abortion based specifically on gender or on genetic abnormalaties.
Senate Bill 2305 requires physicians providing abortions to be licensed in the State of North Dakota and to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.
National groups quickly responded to the bills' signings. The New York based Center for Reproductive Rights already committed itself to assisting Fargo's Red River Women's Clinic in a challenge to HB1456.
Priests for Life, a national Catholic Organization in New York, opposed to abortion, issued a statement praising Governor Dairymple.
Tomorrow I will post some of the responses, both pro and con to the legislation.
