Not Today, Not Tomorrow, But Now

Everyone procrastinates sometimes, but 20% of people chronically procrastinate! They avoid difficult tasks and deliberately look for distractions, which, unfortunately, are increasingly available.

Did you know there are 3 types of procrastinators? They are......

1. The arousal type or thrill seekers, who wait for the last minute for the euphoric rush.

2. The avoider type, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success but in either case they are very concerned what others may think of them.

3. The decisional type, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events.

In accordance with Freud, the pleasure principle may be responsible for procrastination;  humans prefer avoiding negative emotions, and delaying a stressful task.

Here are just a few of the ways you can tell if you are a Procrastinator.

  • You fill your day with low priority tasks from your To Do List.
  • You read an e-mail several times before you decide when you re going to work on it.  Today, tomorrow or now?
  • You sit down to start a high-priority job and almost immediately you go off and make yourself a cup of coffee.
  • You leave an item on your To Do List for a long time even though you know it is very important to get it done.
  • You wait for the “right time” or “right mood” to start that important job you know needs to be done

How can we fix this problem of procrastination?

We can work on it by finding out WHY you are procrastinating.  Is it because the job you are doing is unpleasant?  Is it because you are disorganized?  Is it because you are afraid of failure?  Is is because you are afraid of success?

Procrastination is a habit…..a deeply ingraincd pattern of behavior.  So consequently you will not break this habit overnight. It is almost like an addiction.  Some people may need physiological help.

Here are some general tips which will help motivate you to get moving.

Give yourself a reward.   Example, give yourself a chocolate chip cookie at lunch time if you have completed a certain task that needed attention.

Ask someone, your spouse, friend, co-worker to check up on you.  Peer pressure works!

Think about the consequences that not doing the unpleasant job would result in.
